An optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDRs) is used to characterize optical fiber cable. Using a series of optical pulses the OTDR injects and then reads the light scattered or reflected back from various points along the fiber. The returning optical pulses are measured and the strength is plotted as a function of time by fiber length. Distance to splices, connectors, faults and the end of the cable can then be discovered.
